The Premier Padel P2 tournament in Gijón witnessed a historic victory as the young Spanish duo, Francisco “Curro” Cabeza (17) and Diego Garcia (18), clinched the title, becoming the youngest pair to triumph on the Qatar Airways Premier Padel Tour.
In a thrilling final held at the Guia Sports Palace, Cabeza and Garcia displayed remarkable composure and skill to overcome the formidable Argentinian pair, Tolito Aguirre and Gonza Alfonso, affectionately known as the “Magicos.”
The match unfolded with an intense first set, where the young Spaniards edged out their opponents with a 7-5 scoreline. A spectacular X3 winner by Garcia sealed the set in their favor. However, Aguirre and Alfonso rallied back, taking the second set 6-4, setting the stage for a dramatic decider.
In the final set, Cabeza and Garcia found a crucial breakthrough at 5-3, ultimately securing a 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory.
Overwhelmed with emotion, Garcia expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am so happy to have lived this week, I thank everyone.” Cabeza, who was crowned junior world champion in 2023, acknowledged the intensity of the match, stating, “It was a very complicated match, but we managed to win.”
